Overcoming the Obstacles of Traditional Contract Manufacturing with Array: Mosaic & Microart Services Inc.

Located in Ontario, Canada, Microart Services Inc. is an electronic and design services contract manufacturer that provides a number of services for low-to- mid volume productions including rapid prototyping, circuit design, PCB assembly, and product box builds. With 40 years of experience in assembly and production services, Microart is working to provide rapid, custom solutions to an expansive variety of customers.

The Challenge

In a competitive market, the demand for quicker, cheaper products continues to grow. With traditional manufacturing methods, such as Injection Molding, several production obstacles have surfaced. Notably, they require a large initial investment, take significant time to set up, and are not conducive to product iteration and improvement; this leaves companies like Microart dependent on third party vendors to meet the needs of their customers. This often results in further inefficiencies, leading to weeks-long turnaround times for parts that cost fractions of a cent to produce.

Microart has tried a number of commercial 3D printers in the past to combat some of the aforementioned issues, but they struggled to scale their operations to meet increasing customer demands. In this vein, Microart was initially drawn to Array for its automated capabilities and high throughput potential.

The Solution

The ability to produce parts on demand with Array, has provided enormous benefit for Microart when it comes to maximizing efficiency for customer orders. Namely, with Array, they have been able to:

  1. Minimize their part inventory, thus freeing up space and capital.
  2. Unlock greater flexibility for product design; they can now work through order revisions with greater speed and adaptability.

“The ability to develop and produce custom plastic parts at scale, on our factory floor, is great for our business and new client acquisition.”

- James McColl, Senior Program Manager Microart Services Inc.

The Future

Array offers users greater flexibility for product improvement and iteration. When it comes to Microart, Instead of investing thousands of dollars and waiting weeks for new molds to be cast in order to implement a simple design change, they are now able to edit and approve a digital file and print new parts within the hour. Subsequently, they can offer their clients more opportunities for revisions and development, or turn around parts for internal use with minimal wait.
